Few bands have held the Swedish death metal flag as stubbornly as Unleashed. Founded in Stockholm in 1989 by vocalist and bassist Johnny Hedlund, the band carved out their own corner of the genre with a relentless, no frills approach that AllMusic once summed up as "brutal, unwavering death metal." Their lyrical world pulls from Viking culture, Norse folklore, and pre Christian mythology, with a handful of J. R. R. Tolkien references thrown in for good measure. Unleashed are considered one of the "big four" of Swedish death metal alongside Dismember, Entombed, and Grave. They debuted in 1991 with Where No Life Dwells, toured with Morbid Angel, and have kept releasing records at a steady pace ever since. After a mid career hiatus they came back swinging with Hell's Unleashed in 2002, signed to Nuclear Blast and later Napalm Records, and released their fourteenth studio album No Sign of Life in 2021. Their sound has barely shifted in thirty plus years, and that is very much the point.
