About
Also known as: Lady V, Val “Lady V” Young, Valaria Marie Young
Val Young's career runs through some of the biggest names in funk and hip hop. George Clinton hired her as a background vocalist for The Brides of Funkenstein in 1977, and a few years later she was singing with The Gap Band, featured on the funk hit "Oops Up Side Your Head" and recording five albums with them. Rick James then pushed her into the spotlight as a solo act, billing her the "Black Marilyn Monroe" and getting her signed to Motown. He produced her debut Seduction in 1985, which gave her "Mind Games", "Piece of My Heart" and "If You Should Ever Be Lonely". A second album, Private Conversations, followed in 1987 on Amherst Records. After that she became one of the most in demand backing singers around, touring with Bobby Brown and appearing on records by Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Dr. Dre, Teena Marie and plenty more. She also sang on Eddie Murphy and Snoop Lion's "Red Light" and has fronted a touring lineup of The Mary Jane Girls.
