About
Valentina Magaletti operates somewhere between percussion and pure sonic sculpture. The London based, Bari born drummer and composer has built a reputation as one of experimental music's most restlessly collaborative figures, turning up in projects that range from dub inflected improv to orchestral reimaginings of Can classics. Her technique, which she describes as storytelling through rhythm and vibration rather than language, fits a body of work that spans electroacoustic, musique concrète, and far beyond. Her 2022 solo record Batterie Fragile is a good example of what sets her apart: recorded using a ceramic drum kit designed by Parisian artist Yves Chaudouët, the whole thing is built around an instrument that could shatter at any moment. She has also put out A Queer Anthology of Drums, a personal record that threads together low fi drones and field recordings, and she co founded Permanent Draft, an imprint dedicated to amplifying female, non binary and transgender voices in experimental music. As one half of CZN with João Pais Filipe, she released The Golden Path in 2018.
