Valery Gergiev is one of classical music's most commanding figures, holding the artistic reins of both the Mariinsky Theatre and the Bolshoi Theatre simultaneously, a combination no one had managed before him. His career took off at the Kirov Opera in 1978, and he has since built an extraordinary conducting record spanning Prokofiev, Mussorgsky, and Tchaikovsky, with memorable engagements at the London Symphony Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, and the Munich Philharmonic. His work stretches well beyond concert halls: he conducted near the ruins of the South Ossetian Parliament during the 2008 war, and at the Roman Theatre of Palmyra in 2016 as a tribute to victims of the conflict there. His political ties to Vladimir Putin have generated serious controversy, and cost him the Munich Philharmonic post in 2022 after he declined to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
