About

Few big bands have kept a weekly gig going as long as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, which has held down Monday nights at the Village Vanguard in New York for over five decades. The band traces its roots to 1965, when trumpeter Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis launched what became one of the most influential large ensembles since the swing era. Jones brought sharp, harmonically adventurous arrangements, while Lewis reshaped big band drumming with a looser, small group feel that became instantly recognizable. After Jones left for Copenhagen in 1978 and Lewis passed away in 1990, the band kept going under its current name. As the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the group has released a steady stream of albums spotlighting composers like Jim McNeely, Bob Brookmeyer, and Slide Hampton. Grammy wins came for Live in Munich and Monday Night Live at the Village Vanguard, and a 2024 double live album celebrating the music of Thad Jones shows the band is still very much at it.
