Vera Beths is a Dutch violinist who left a real mark on how baroque and chamber music gets played, and she taught generations of violinists along the way. By all accounts she was as influential in the classroom as on stage, and the way she works with students is what stands out in portraits of her. She had a close musical partnership with Reinbert de Leeuw. Her daughter, the filmmaker Carine Bijlsma, made a documentary about her career, rounding off a trilogy that also covers De Leeuw and Bijlsma's own father, the cellist Anner Bijlsma. In it, Beths talks about the bow as something endless that stretches far beyond the instrument. That's where it turns magical, she says, and that's what she and her fellow musicians are: magicians.
