About
Also known as: Vilma Kaisa Johanna Jääskeläinen
Kaija Saariaho found Vilma Jää on YouTube while she was writing her opera Innocence, and asked for an audition tape. That led to the role of Marketa, with Saariaho shaping the music around Jää's voice and technique. When the opera premiered at the Aix en Provence Festival in 2021, her performance drew wide praise, and she has since sung the part at the Finnish National Opera, the Dutch National Opera and the Metropolitan Opera, among others. Outside the opera house, Jää is a singer, composer and fiddler who specialises in Finnish folk music. Her debut album Kosto came out in 2023 and blends Finnish folklore with electronic sounds. More recently she made "Manalan Mailla", a track created exclusively for the Control Resonant trailer.
