About
Violent Soho started out as Showroom in Mansfield, a Brisbane suburb whose postcode, 4122, ended up all over their merch. Their name came from the Rancid song "Ruby Soho" mashed together with a guitarist's wish to be called "Violent". Critics love to file them under grunge, with Nirvana, Pixies and Mudhoney as touchstones, though the band themselves prefer "stoner pop". The early run was scrappy and ambitious: a debut EP, Pigs & T.V., paid for by selling a car, then the album We Don't Belong Here in 2008. A deal with Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace! label followed, and they recorded their self titled second album with producer Gil Norton at Rockfield Studios in Wales. Things got bigger from there. Hungry Ghost went Gold in Australia, and both Waco and Everything Is A OK debuted at number 1 on the ARIA charts.
