Virgin Steele are a New York heavy metal band who have been doing things their own way since 1981, blending American metal with epic, symphonic and even classical influences into something pretty singular. Vocalist and keyboardist David DeFeis is the creative centre of gravity, and his taste for grand, mythology soaked storytelling has defined the band's best work, from the epic grandeur of Noble Savage to the sprawling concept albums The Marriage of Heaven and Hell Parts I and II, and the full blown metal opera The House of Atreus, drawn from Greek myth and the Oresteia. Their catalogue has taken some interesting detours along the way, including the bluesy hard rock of Life Among the Ruins and the Sumerian legend inspired concept record Visions of Eden. Early fans included two bands from their demo days correspondence: Queensrÿche and Metallica, both of whom wrote in admiring letters before they were household names. Virgin Steele have never quite broken through to mainstream recognition, but among fans of epic and symphonic metal they remain one of the most inventive acts the genre has produced.
