Vital Remains have been one of death metal's most uncompromising outfits since forming in Providence, Rhode Island in 1988. What sets them apart from most of their peers is their willingness to build songs that stretch to eight or nine minutes, weaving in acoustic Spanish style solos and, from the Dave Suzuki era onward, neoclassical lead guitar work that gave their sound a real sense of ambition. Their earlier material had traces of keyboards and ambient texture, but they stripped all that away after Forever Underground, going full death metal and never looking back. The band hit a creative peak with Dechristianize in 2003 and Icons of Evil in 2007, both featuring Deicide frontman Glen Benton on vocals, which brought them wider attention in the genre. Since then, Tony Lazaro has remained the sole constant creative force, keeping the band alive through extensive lineup changes, the tragic deaths of three former vocalists between 2017 and 2018, and Lazaro's own serious health battles following emergency brain tumor surgery in 2020.
