Also known as: Ashkenazi, Vladimir Asjkenazi, Vladimir Davidovitj Asjkenazi, Vladímír Ashkenazy, Владимир Давидович Ашкенази, ヴラディーミル・アシュケナージ
Few pianists have recorded as comprehensively as Vladimir Ashkenazy. Born in what is now Nizhny Novgorod and eventually settled in Iceland, he built one of the most extensive discographies in classical music, covering the complete piano works of Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and Scriabin, the complete Beethoven sonatas, and multiple cycles of the Beethoven and Rachmaninoff concertos with conductors including Georg Solti, Zubin Mehta, and André Previn. His seven Grammy Awards reflect a recording career with Decca stretching back to 1963. Halfway through his piano career he moved seriously into conducting, leading the Royal Philharmonic, the Czech Philharmonic, the NHK Symphony, and the Sydney Symphony at various points. His chamber recordings are just as notable, particularly the Beethoven violin sonatas with Itzhak Perlman and the piano trios with Perlman and Lynn Harrell. He retired from public performance in January 2020.
