About
Vocapella is an eleven member vocal ensemble from Denmark, directed by Jenny van Spaendonk. The group specialises in polyphonic music and has built a reputation for a repertoire that spans an unusually wide range: medieval music sits alongside contemporary compositions, and classical works share space with pop and close harmony. That breadth is a real part of their identity, not just a footnote. One piece that features prominently in their programme is Mariamuziek by the Swedish composer, conductor and organist Anders Öhrwall (1932 to 2012). The work consists of twelve choral pieces dedicated to Mary, performed with a small ensemble of narrator, flutes, cello, basso continuo and percussion, with the narrator weaving the individual movements together through the Christmas story. Vocapella also performs a mix of well known and lesser known Christmas repertoire drawn from various style periods.
