About
Vogelvrij is a trio built on improvisation, and the name is the whole philosophy. In Dutch it describes someone outside the law's protection, but this group flips that into something good: being free to fly wherever the music wants to go, without rules, hierarchies or a set route. The line up is Joshua Herwig on cello, Oene van Geel on viola and Marc Sentenie on drums and percussion. All three also use their voices and what the blurb calls related sound, so the music is full of flutter, swoops and rustling textures rather than neat tunes. They treat that loose, in the moment playing as the point, and they have set up sessions with microphones running so those improvised flights can end up on record.
