About
Also known as: Astaroth
Vulcano sit near the very start of the story of extreme metal in Latin America. Formed in Santos in 1981, the Brazilian band built its own network to get gigs and gear in a country with no ready made scene, and Terrorizer reckons they kick started musical blasphemy across the whole continent. Their 1983 debut, Om Pushne Namah, was sung in Portuguese, which set them apart from most early extreme metal. Sepultura took influence from them, and AllMusic notes their violent mix of black and thrash metal became a worldwide cult legend, reaching even Norway's early 90s black metal circle. After the 1986 album Bloody Vengeance came Anthropophagy and Who Are the True, then a long gap after Rat Race in 1990. They came back in 2004 on their own label, Renegados Records, with Tales from the Black Book, and have kept releasing albums ever since, most recently Epilogue in 2024. They have toured Europe several times, including a run with Sweden's Nifelheim, and put out the live album Live II! Stockholm Stormed.
