About
Walter Trout spent years as a sideman before anyone heard his name on a marquee, backing legends like John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, and Percy Mayfield, then grinding through stints as lead guitarist for Canned Heat and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, a band that had already forged the reputations of Peter Green and Eric Clapton. In 1989 he struck out on his own, forming the Walter Trout Band and quickly building a devoted following in Europe, particularly Scandinavia, where festival crowds took to his hard blues rock sound immediately. His debut, Life in the Jungle, made a serious impression, and by 1992 his first two albums had shifted over 100,000 copies. The story took a dark turn in 2013 when Trout was diagnosed with cirrhosis while on tour in Germany. He needed a liver transplant, spent eight months bedridden, lost the ability to speak, walk, and play guitar, and had to relearn all three from scratch. He documented the whole ordeal on his 2015 album Battle Scars, then came back swinging. His 2019 album Survivor Blues debuted at number one on the Billboard Blues Chart and stayed in the top ten for twelve weeks.
