About
Wardruna built their sound around instruments most people have never even heard of: deer hide frame drums, goat horns, lur, kraviklyra, mouth harp, and even trees, rocks, water, and torches. Formed in Bergen in 2003 by Einar Selvik, Gaahl, and Lindy Fay Hella, the Norwegian group set out to bring Norse runic traditions to life through music, and their first three albums follow the Elder Futhark runes from start to finish. Their profile got a serious boost when Selvik contributed to the score of the TV series Vikings, and the third album Runaljod, Ragnarok hit number one on Billboard's World Albums chart off the back of that exposure. Since then Wardruna signed to Sony Music and Columbia Records, released the atmospheric Kvitravn in 2021 and the follow up live album shortly after, and in early 2025 dropped their sixth studio album Birna. The name Wardruna itself translates roughly as "the guardian of secrets", which feels about right.
