About
Watain have built one of black metal's most genuinely unsettling live reputations. The Uppsala trio, together since 1998, are known for shows packed with pyrotechnics, animal carcasses, Satanic ritual, and real blood, which at a 2014 Brooklyn gig they reportedly sprayed directly onto the audience, leaving some people physically ill. TMZ picked it up, and suddenly black metal was tabloid news. The band's name comes from an early Von recording, which tells you something about how deep into the tradition they sit. Musically they have seven full length albums to their name, ranging from the relentless early assaults of Rabid Death's Curse and Casus Luciferi through to the more adventurous The Wild Hunt, which pulled in strands of heavy metal, progressive metal, and doom. Lawless Darkness earned them a Swedish Grammi for Best Hard Rock album, a strange but satisfying acknowledgment. Their most recent record, The Agony and Ecstasy of Watain, came out in 2022 on Nuclear Blast.
