Few European broadcast orchestras carry the track record of the WDR Big Band, Cologne's jazz institution under the umbrella of public broadcaster Westdeutscher Rundfunk. What started as a radio dance orchestra in postwar Germany eventually evolved into a full scale jazz big band, picking up four Grammy Awards along the way, including Best Large Jazz Ensemble for Some Skunk Funk alongside Randy and Michael Brecker, and Best Jazz Vocal Album for Avant Gershwin with Patti Austin. The band's strength is its collaborative spirit: it regularly pairs with guest artists across jazz, latin jazz and beyond, producing records with everyone from Joe Zawinul to Ron Carter to Andrea Motis. Since 2016, Bob Mintzer has served as chief conductor with Vince Mendoza as Composer in Residence, keeping the creative output sharp. Their 2019 live recording with Bill Laurance even took home the Deutscher Jazzpreis for broadcast production of the year.
