About
We the People had a sound that was pure mid sixties garage fury: pounding drums, wailing harmonica, raucous vocals and a fuzz guitar that could strip paint. The Orlando band built their reputation on a string of singles, none of which cracked the national charts but several of which burned through regional ones. Their defining moment came with "Mirror of Your Mind" in 1966, a track that hit the Top 10 in multiple regional markets and later turned up on the influential Nuggets series, introducing the band to a whole new generation of garage rock obsessives worldwide. Much of that raw energy came from two in house songwriters, Tommy Talton and Wayne Proctor. Proctor even played a homemade eight stringed instrument called the octachord, built by a friend's grandfather, as a DIY alternative to the fashionable sitar. The band dissolved after a Halloween show in 1970, but their singles have kept resurfacing on compilation after compilation ever since, including the 1998 two disc retrospective Mirror of Our Minds on Sundazed Music.
