About
White Ward are a black metal band from Odesa who made their name by letting a saxophone drift through the darkness. Their sound mixes post black metal with dark jazz, and it works far better than it sounds on paper. Founded in 2012 by guitarist Yurii Kazaryan, the band took its name from a ward in a mental asylum, a nod to the themes of mental illness running through their music. Three albums so far: Futility Report in 2017, Love Exchange Failure in 2019 and False Light in 2022. The second one swapped the occult and Lovecraftian leanings of the debut for the social and psychological horrors of the modern megacity, with Tokyo at night on the cover. Loudwire even listed Poisonous Flowers of Violence among the catchiest black metal songs around. False Light arrived four months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and Kazaryan described it as culture born out of fire and destruction. A planned 2023 tour, Roadburn Festival included, fell through when the band was not allowed to leave the country.
