About

Wild Flutes on the Run brings together three flutists who have each pushed the instrument far beyond its classical role: Robert Dick, Ned McGowan, and Anne La Berge. Dick has spent decades treating the flute as something closer to a human operated synthesizer, building his playing and composing around the idea that sound can constantly shift and transform. His invention, the Glissando Headjoint, adds a flexibility to the instrument comparable to what a whammy bar does for electric guitar, unlocking a new range of vocal tones that simply did not exist before. Ned McGowan, an American Dutch composer and flutist based in Amsterdam, specialises in the contrabass flute and has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw, and the Purcell Room. He has also developed his own vertical flute design. Anne La Berge works at the edges of composed and improvised music, weaving together quarter tone flute, electronics, live processing, and spoken text into a sound world shaped by social and political concerns. Together the three create something genuinely unlike standard flute performance.
