About
Also known as: Bonnie, Bonnie Prince, Joseph Will Oldham
Will Oldham has spent decades finding ways to make sure nobody quite knows what to expect from him. Starting in the early 1990s, he cycled through a string of group names, Palace Brothers, Palace Songs, Palace Music, just plain Palace, partly because he felt each record was so different in sound and personnel that giving it the same name would be misleading. In 1998 he settled on Bonnie "Prince" Billy as his main alias, a name he built from references to Bonnie Prince Charlie, Nat King Cole, and Billy the Kid. His music draws from Americana, folk, country, punk, and indie rock, held together by a voice critics have called a fragile warble haunting the edges of American folk tradition. Albums like Viva Last Blues, There Is No One What Will Take Care of You, and I See a Darkness have landed on multiple greatest albums lists, and "I See a Darkness" has been covered by Johnny Cash, Rosalía, and others. He also acts, with roles in Kelly Reichardt films and an early appearance as a teen preacher in John Sayles's Matewan.
