Few conductors have done more to bring French Baroque music back to life than William Christie. Born in the US, he relocated to France in 1971 and never really looked back, eventually taking French citizenship in 1995. His reputation is built above all on Les Arts Florissants, the ensemble he founded in 1979 and named after an opera by Marc Antoine Charpentier. Through that group he has unearthed and recorded a remarkable range of forgotten Baroque works, with Charpentier at the centre, many of them world premieres. The 1987 staging of Lully's Atys at the Opéra Comique put Christie firmly on the map, and he has kept up that momentum ever since, conducting at Glyndebourne, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the BBC Proms. He also plays harpsichord and has long been committed to teaching, founding the biennial Le Jardin des Voix academy for young singers and running historical performance masterclasses at the Juilliard School. As recently as late 2024 he was back at the Opéra Comique, leading Les Arts Florissants in Rameau's Les Fêtes d'Hébé.
