Winterfylleth have built a reputation as one of the most serious acts in English black metal, calling their own sound "English Heritage Black Metal" and drawing on Old English culture and landscape for both their name and their lyrics. The band's name comes from the Old English term for the first full moon of winter, which sets the tone for everything they do. Their 2010 album The Mercian Sphere landed them on stages at Wacken, Hellfest, and Graspop, and from there the momentum never really stopped. The Reckoning Dawn from 2020 was voted the number one black metal album of that year by Metal Hammer Germany. Over nine studio albums, Winterfylleth have kept their sound dense and atmospheric without losing the rawness that made them compelling in the first place. They have shared stages with Enslaved, Emperor, and Gaahl's Wyrd, and in 2015 picked up the Metal Hammer Golden Gods award for best underground band. Their history also earned them a dedicated chapter in Dayal Patterson's landmark book Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult.
