About
Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel has spent decades quietly building one of the more distinctive voices in contemporary jazz. His playing sits at the intersection of jazz and classical sensibility, and his catalog stretches from early 1990s New York sessions to a long and fruitful run with ECM Records that has produced albums like Driftwood, Rising Grace, and the 2023 release Dance of the Elders. Along the way he has played alongside Brad Mehldau, Ambrose Akinmusire, Larry Grenadier, Brian Blade, and Ralph Towner, among many others. Muthspiel also runs his own label, Material Records, which he founded in 2000, giving him room to document projects on his own terms. He has composed for ensembles including the Klangforum Wien and the Hugo Wolf Quartet, showing a range that goes well beyond the standard jazz gig. His trio work with Grenadier and Blade is particularly worth seeking out, and his ECM output keeps landing new entries, with Tokyo listed for 2025.
