About
Also known as: Wolfgang Petray, Wolfgang Petri, Wolgang Petry
Wolfgang Petry, born Franz Hubert Wolfgang Remling, is a Cologne schlager musician who turned the genre into a stadium sport. His 1996 best of compilation Alles sold over two million copies and that same year he was the top charting German language act around. He went on to win the Echo award for Best Folk/Pop Artist five years running, from 1997 to 2001, and picked up the Goldene Stimmgabel a remarkable eight times for being the most successful German solo pop act. Live, Petry was a different beast altogether. Backed by a band of rock musicians, his schlager took on a rawer, louder dimension that filled stadiums. His 1999 farewell tour, captured on DVD as Einfach Geil!, became the stuff of legend among fans. He officially retired in 2006 but kept coming back, releasing new material through the 2010s and launching a side project called the Pete Wolf Band, where he swaps German schlager for English language country oriented music. In 2025 he recorded a new version of his classic Verlieben, verloren, vergessen, verzeih'n together with the German women's national football team.
