About
Wood Nymphs is a performance project built around Bulgarian percussionist and marimba virtuoso Tatiana Koleva, who conceived it as a meeting point between flamenco and Balkan rhythms. The central dialogue is between her marimba playing and the footwork of flamenco dancer Claudia Karapanou, with the two pushing against each other inside the twelve count cycle shared by many flamenco and Balkan styles. A wooden installation functions as a living resonating body at the heart of the staging. The ensemble is fleshed out by tupans (folk drums), kaval (a Bulgarian shepherd's flute played by Zhivko Vasilev, who also contributes electronics), and additional percussion from Kalina Vladovska. The repertoire consists of original compositions, including a specially arranged Soleá written for Koleva by Florian Magnus Maier.
