About
Also known as: Miles Romans-Hopcraft
Wu Lu is the kind of artist who refuses to sit still in one genre. Songs from the Brixton musician, real name Miles Romans Hopcraft, have been tagged as grunge, post punk, dub, trip hop, drill, screamo, jazz and plenty more, and he once joked that maybe his name will become a genre in itself. Bass is his main instrument, and the punk attitude runs through everything he does, from lyrics about racism, gentrification, inequality and mental health to his habit of speaking truth to power. After self releasing the album Ginga and the EPs N.A.I.S. and S.U.F.O.S., he signed to Warp Records in 2021. His Warp debut Loggerhead followed in 2022, picked up an 83 on Metacritic and nominations at the Libera Awards and the AIM Independent Music Awards. In 2024 came the EP Learning to Swim on Empty, with water as its running theme and guest turns from Rohan Ayinde and Caleb Femi. He has also worked with jazz names like Nubya Garcia and Zara McFarlane, which ties him to South London's jazz scene.
