About
Wu Wei has spent decades doing something genuinely unusual: making the sheng, a Chinese mouth organ with a four thousand year history, feel right at home in European concert halls and jazz venues alike. Based in Berlin since the mid 1990s, he has soloed with the Berlin Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony, and the Seoul Philharmonic, and has premiered over 200 works written specifically for the instrument, including ten concertos. That includes a sheng concerto by Unsuk Chin, recorded with the Seoul Philharmonic for Deutsche Grammophon. His playing pulls from traditional Chinese repertoire, Baroque music, contemporary avant garde composition, and free improvisation, a mix that came directly from his exposure to the Berlin music scene. He has also commissioned new works from composers like Tan Dun, Jörg Widmann, and Toshio Hosokawa, and developed new techniques that push the instrument into territory his teachers never mapped. His discography includes collaborations ranging from Stefan Schultze's large ensemble jazz to the Baroque group Holland Baroque.
