Xavier Davis is a jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and producer whose career got a serious boost when vocalist Betty Carter spotted him performing with his college ensemble at a 1994 jazz educators convention in Boston and promptly brought him to New York to work with her trio. That early break set the tone for a career spent alongside some of the heaviest names in jazz. He has recorded as a sideman for Betty Carter, Freddie Hubbard, Abbey Lincoln, Wynton Marsalis, and many others, and his work with the Christian McBride Big Band appeared on two Grammy winning albums, The Good Feeling and Bringin' It. Davis leads his own Xavier Davis Trio and has also served as Musical Director for the Boys Choir of Harlem. On the academic side, he taught at the Juilliard Jazz program for six years before being appointed Associate Professor of Jazz Piano at Michigan State University in 2014. Drummers Carl Allen and Billy Hart, along with pianist James Williams, are among the mentors he credits for shaping his musical path.
