Xeno & Oaklander have been quietly one of the most compelling acts in minimal wave and cold wave revival since their debut in the mid 2000s. Sean McBride and Liz Wendelbo started recording in an abandoned factory near the East River, and that lo fi, almost illicit atmosphere never fully left their sound. They work almost exclusively with analog gear and skip post processing entirely, which gives their music that brittle, precise edge Pitchfork once described as synth lines you could practically snap over your knee. Over a run of albums on Wierd Records, Ghostly International and Dais Records, they have kept evolving without losing their signature coldness. Sets & Lights pulled in darkwave, Italo disco and techno; Par Avion was built around Serge synthesizers and inspired by synesthesia; Hypnos marked Wendelbo stepping up as sole vocalist and polyphonic synths making a comeback. Their most recent album, Via Negativa (in the doorway light), came out in 2024.
