Few careers in recent memory burned as briefly or as intensely as XXXTentacion's. Working under the name X, the Florida rapper built a cult following on SoundCloud from 2013 onward by fusing trap, emo, nu metal, and lo fi into something that genuinely didn't sound like anyone else, leaning on distortion and heavy guitar where most rap producers wouldn't dare. His debut album 17 peaked at number two on the Billboard 200, and its follow up ? debuted at number one, with the lead single "Sad!" posthumously hitting the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and racking up over 2.1 billion Spotify streams. He is widely credited as a key figure in establishing emo rap and SoundCloud rap as recognizable genres, and his influence on the later rage music movement is well documented. XXXTentacion was shot and killed in June 2018 at age 20. Two posthumous albums followed, Skins and Bad Vibes Forever, the former also reaching number one.
