About
Also known as: Yasmin Maria Williams
Yasmin Williams plays guitar in a way that makes people stop and stare. She lays it face up on her lap, tunes the strings to a specific harmony, and fingerpicks while adding two handed lap tapping for rhythm. Over the years she has also worked in tap shoes, a cello bow and a kalimba. Pitchfork said her inventive style has made her stand out among solo guitarists, and Rolling Stone called her songs textured, harmonious soundscapes. Most of what she writes is instrumental. She put out her debut album Unwind on her own in 2018, with the tune New Beginnings at its heart. Urban Driftwood followed in 2021 on Spinster Records, written during the COVID lockdown and shaped by the Black Lives Matter protests that summer. Acadia arrived in 2024 on Nonesuch Records, with guests like Darlingside and Allison de Groot popping up on singles around it. She has also done two NPR Tiny Desk concerts.
