Yasuaki Shimizu is a Japanese composer, saxophonist and producer whose most celebrated work is his radical rethinking of Bach's Cello Suites, recorded on tenor saxophone in acoustically unusual spaces: an underground quarry, a mine, an Italian palazzo. The idea was to treat the room itself as a resonating instrument, and the results, released across two volumes in 1996 and 1999, became landmarks in contemporary classical crossover. His 2015 album Goldberg Variations pushed that further, premiering a saxophone and contrabass arrangement of Bach's Goldberg Variations that he had first performed live in Tokyo. Before the Bach projects took over, Shimizu spent the 1980s restlessly genre hopping. His experimental rock band Mariah blended Japanese festival rhythms with rock, while his Saxophonettes project, which began as a one man operation in 1983, produced lush Hollywood tinged records layering orchestral arrangements over reggae grooves. He also worked in European sessions with French, British and Senegalese collaborators, composed film scores including the Oscar nominated documentary Cutie and the Boxer, and produced or arranged for artists ranging from jazz vocalist Helen Merrill to Ryuichi Sakamoto.
