Year of No Light built their reputation on a sound that feels like standing at the edge of something vast and threatening. The Bordeaux sextet started out blending sludge metal aggression with psychedelic post rock haze on their 2006 debut Nord, drawing one early reviewer to describe them as 'The Cure playing sludge'. That comparison gives a sense of the mood: heavy but atmospheric, brutal but spacious. A 2008 lineup overhaul ditched the vocalist in favour of a third guitarist and a second drummer, pushing the band into fully instrumental territory. From there they pulled in black metal, doom, drone and dark ambient textures across Ausserwelt and Tocsin. They are not just a recording band either: YONL have performed a live soundtrack to Carl Dreyer's silent film Vampyr, collaborated on a video installation reworking Yves Klein's Monotone Symphony, and played festivals like Roadburn and Hellfest. The kind of band that makes heavy music feel genuinely cinematic.
