Yellowman is widely credited with shaping the raw, unfiltered sound that defines modern dancehall, and he did it largely on his own terms. Born Winston Foster in Kingston, Jamaica, he rose to prominence in the early 1980s through relentless sound system performances and a run of singles with producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes. By 1981 he had become the first dancehall artist signed to a major American label, Columbia Records, a landmark moment for the genre. His debut album Mister Yellowman landed in 1982, followed quickly by Zungguzungguguzungguzeng in 1983, and across that decade he put out around twenty albums. His sexually charged lyrics drew criticism, but he remained unapologetic, calling it simply "reality talk." A 1987 cover of "Blueberry Hill" topped the Jamaican charts for weeks. After surviving cancer, he shifted toward more spiritual territory with the 1994 album Prayer. He earned Grammy nominations for Best Reggae Album in 1985 and 1998, the first dancehall artist to receive that recognition, and he continues to perform internationally with his Sagittarius Band.
