Few cellists have roamed as far from the concert hall as Yo Yo Ma. Yes, he plays the full classical canon with the world's top orchestras and has racked up 20 Grammy Awards across more than 92 albums, but his real calling card is range. Over the years he has recorded American bluegrass, traditional Chinese melodies, the tangos of Astor Piazzolla, Brazilian music, and film scores for John Williams and Ennio Morricone, among others. His primary instrument is the Davidov Stradivarius, built in 1712, which in his hands connects centuries of musical tradition to just about every corner of the globe. He has collaborated with an almost comically eclectic roster of artists, from Bobby McFerrin and Zakir Hussain to Miley Cyrus and James Taylor. As a UN Messenger of Peace since 2006 and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, his public role extends well beyond performance. Most recently he performed at the reopening of Notre Dame de Paris in December 2024, a moment that summed him up pretty neatly: classical music's great connector, showing up where it matters.
