Young Magic blend electronic textures, percussive rhythms and field recordings into something that genuinely sounds like nowhere else. The Brooklyn duo, Melati Malay and Isaac Emmanuel, built their reputation on albums recorded across multiple continents: their debut Melt was tracked everywhere from Iceland to Brazil, and Breathing Statues took shape in Morocco, France, the Czech Republic and beyond. The New York Times called Melt "lush and immersive", and that description still holds across their catalog. Their reach goes further than their own releases. Purity Ring sampled them, Playboi Carti's team pulled a writing credit from their work, and UK trip hop figure Tricky thought enough of their song "Lucien" to record and produce his own version of it. Still Life, their third album, drew on Malay's Indonesian roots and touched on questions of identity and ideology. Outside of Young Magic, Malay also records solo as Melati ESP and is part of the electronic project Asa Tone.
