About
Also known as: Ioulianna Avdeïeva, Julianna Andrejewna Awdejewa, Julianna Awdejewa, Yulianna Avdeeva, Юлианна Андреевна Авдеева
Winning the International Chopin Piano Competition in 2010 put Yulianna Avdeeva in rare company: she became only the fourth woman ever to take the top prize, following legends like Martha Argerich and Halina Czerny Stefańska. The Moscow born pianist brings real range to her playing, moving comfortably between Chopin, Bach, Schubert, Prokofiev and Liszt across a string of releases on Mirare and Pentatone. Her 2012 recording of the Chopin concertos is particularly striking for its use of an 1849 Erard fortepiano, giving the music a period instrument texture that sets it apart. During the pandemic she kept her audience close with weekly Bach podcasts, and she has collaborated with artists including Julia Fischer, Gidon Kremer and cellist Sol Gabetta. Her recent Pentatone work includes a Chopin album called Voyage and a recording of Shostakovich's Preludes and Fugues Op. 87, showing no sign of her ambitions narrowing.
