About
Also known as: Zap Mamp
Few acts have blended African vocal traditions with hip hop and neo soul as distinctively as Zap Mama. Founded in Brussels by Marie Daulne, a Belgian of Congolese origin, the group built its reputation on polyphonic female harmonies rooted in field research across Africa, where Daulne learned from griots, Tuareg women, Pygmies, and other oral tradition bearers. That foundation gave the music a depth that caught ears far beyond Belgium. Their song 'Iko Iko' appeared in Mission: Impossible II, and their 2004 album Ancestry in Progress connected them with Erykah Badu, Questlove, and Common, leaning hard into hip hop and R&B. Later records like Supermoon brought in Tony Allen and Michael Franti, while Odyssée arrived in 2022, showing that Daulne's restless creative drive has never really slowed down.
