About

Also known as: Van Den Budenmayer & Zbigniew Preisner, Zbignev Preisner, Zbigniev Preisner, Збигнев Прайснер

Zbigniew Preisner built his name as the composer behind Krzysztof Kieślowski's films, and he did it without a single formal music lesson. He taught himself by listening to records and transcribing the parts. The result is a sparse, tonal, neo Romantic sound, with Paganini and Sibelius among his acknowledged influences. His scores for Three Colours: Blue and Three Colours: Red brought César awards and Golden Globe nominations, and he later wrote The Secret Garden at the invitation of Francis Ford Coppola. Away from the screen, his Requiem for My Friend became a memorial to Kieślowski after the director's death, and its Lacrimosa turned up in Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life. He also orchestrated David Gilmour's On An Island and conducted at the Gdańsk shipyards for the live album that followed. Oh, and he and Kieślowski invented a fake 18th century Dutch composer, Van den Budenmayer, who gets credited in the films because they both loved the Netherlands.
