About
Zerelda Lee's Candy Store is a six piece band dedicated to the rowdier, more theatrical side of Tom Waits. Rather than leaning into his quieter piano ballads, they go straight for the material that stomps and swings: the noisier, more bombastic sound Waits developed from Swordfishtrombones onward. Think blaring horns, driving rhythms and the kind of music that feels like it crawled out of a late night club or a travelling circus. The lineup brings together scratchy electric guitar, saxophone, double bass, drums, percussion and a voice that sounds like sandpaper dragged through bourbon. They draw on the atmosphere of New Orleans and raw street poetry, playing Waits' songs with genuine conviction rather than straight imitation. If you want the swinging, larger than life Waits with extra steam and volume, this is the band for it.
