Candlelight: Tribute aan ABBA

The Arminiuskerk is a Remonstrant church on Museumpark 3 in Rotterdam's city centre, constructed between 1895 and 1897. Like much of central Rotterdam, the building suffered severe damage in the German bombing of May 1940 and was subsequently restored after the war. That history gives the church a particular resonance in a city otherwise defined by postwar modernism: it stands as one of the relatively few older structures still standing in this part of the centre. What sets the Arminiuskerk apart as a concert location is its acoustics. The interior carries sound exceptionally well, which has made it a natural draw for performers and promoters working across very different genres. On any given month the programme might include intimate candlelight concerts featuring string arrangements of film scores by Hans Zimmer or music from Bridgerton, classical piano evenings such as those by Alexis Ffrench, or songwriter and indie rock performances. Artists including Eefje de Visser, Luka Bloom, The Wytches and black midi have all played here, and the venue has appeared in the Motel Mozaique festival programme as well. The breadth of that lineup, from contemporary Dutch pop to post punk and piano concerts, reflects how genuinely flexible the space is rather than a fixed identity. The building is wheelchair accessible and sits in the Museumpark area, close to several of Rotterdam's major museums. It does not function primarily as a church in the traditional sense but rather as a cultural venue that happens to occupy a historic ecclesiastical space, and that combination of architectural character and practical versatility is what gives it its particular place in Rotterdam's concert landscape.
