De Nieuwe Anita is a small, deliberately alternative venue on Frederik Hendrikstraat in the Amsterdam West neighbourhood, occupying a space that grew in stages. The operation began in 2001 with underground parties in the back area, and in 2005 the front bar was added, giving the collective more room to programme events on a more frequent basis. That layered origin is still legible in the space today: a front living room that lends itself to intimate acoustic sets and a basement that serves as a stage for louder or more experimental nights. What sets De Nieuwe Anita apart from most small Amsterdam venues is the breadth of things it fits under one roof without losing a sense of identity. Music ranges from touring and up and coming acts to stand up comedy, spoken word and literary evenings. The regular Cinemanita film night has run weekly for well over fifteen years. Literanita, held on the last Thursday of each month and organised by Sjaak Kwadraat, brings together poetry, theatre and performance in the basement. The Amsterdam BeatClub, a monthly night rooted in the aesthetics of Beat Generation jazz and early 1960s beat culture, has been part of the venue almost from the start and typically combines DJs and live music with go go dancers, burlesque and cult VJ visuals. There is also a bookshelf, De Boekenkast, stocked with titles chosen and annotated by favourite authors. The cocktail bar is another point of focus, developed over many years rather than treated as an afterthought. The overall atmosphere people associate with De Nieuwe Anita is that of a cultural living room for Amsterdam's creative underground, small enough to feel personal and eclectic enough to keep regulars coming back across different nights and formats.
