BIRD is a small live music venue at Raampoortstraat 24 to 28 in Rotterdam, with roots that go back to Jazzpodium Rotterdam, a foundation created specifically to address a shortage of jazz and groove oriented programming in the city. From that base, the operation evolved through a phase called Live@BIRD before relaunching under the current name in 2016. The venue celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2026, marking a decade of steady programming in a city that has no shortage of cultural competition. What sets BIRD apart from Rotterdam's larger stages is its deliberate focus on what its founders describe as black music ideas, with hip hop and jazz serving as the core programming pillars alongside soul and related genres. That focus is not incidental but structural: it shapes which artists the venue books, the atmosphere it cultivates, and the community that has built up around it. The Grapevyne, a recurring event inspired by Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and rooted in soulful music, started at BIRD and has run for over thirteen years, illustrating how the venue functions as a home for ongoing club culture rather than just a rotating roster of one off shows. Acts passing through have ranged from emerging figures in UK cloud rap and rage rap to more established artists working in jazz and soul adjacent territory, with Lancey Foux bringing his back2datrap Europe Tour to the space in November 2023. The venue's scale keeps things intimate, which suits the genres it champions.
