Social Pleasure (pop-up)

DB55 is a former timber warehouse in the Houthavens district of Amsterdam, a harbour area that has largely given way to new office and residential buildings while keeping traces of its industrial past. The building has been converted into what its curators call a blended venue, a place where work, leisure, events and sport share the same address rather than being split across separate sites. Innovation, education, health, art and leisure are all part of the mix, and the aim is to bring people from the surrounding neighbourhood and the wider city together under one roof. The conversion was curated by the creative studio D/DOCK, which kept the open, airy character of the old warehouse and turned it into flexible event space. That flexibility is the defining feature of DB55. Rather than a single fixed stage and auditorium, the building offers areas that can be arranged for different kinds of gatherings, from cultural programmes and live performances to conferences, sports activities and informal hospitality. Its purpose driven approach means the venue presents itself less as a traditional concert hall and more as a multi use cultural and community space. For concert goers, this means the experience at DB55 depends on how the space is set up for a given event. The industrial shell, the high ceilings of a working warehouse and the surrounding Houthavens setting give it a different feel from the older music halls in central Amsterdam. It sits in a part of the city that has been reshaped in recent years, and the venue reflects that change, combining the bones of a utilitarian harbour building with a contemporary approach to hosting people.
