Amare opened in late 2022 on Spuiplein in The Hague, the result of a planning and construction process that stretched back to 2009 and ran through a full build phase from January 2020 to July 2022. At 54,000 square metres, it is described as the largest cultural building in the Netherlands, and it holds up to 6,600 people across its various spaces simultaneously. The building is also noted as the country's most sustainably constructed arts complex, and its architecture is considered iconic within the cultural landscape of The Hague city centre. The complex contains four concert and theatre halls alongside rehearsal rooms, studios, classrooms, two catering outlets, and freely accessible public spaces that give it something of the character of a small city within a city. Three permanent resident companies share the building: the Residentie Orkest, the Nederlands Dans Theater, and the Royal Conservatoire. The Concert Hall is particularly associated with the Residentie Orkest and is recognised for its acoustic quality, while the Danstheater is equipped with contemporary stagecraft for large dance productions. A pop programme also runs from the Concert Hall, organised in partnership with PAARD, The Hague's dedicated pop venue. The Conservatoriumzaal serves the conservatoire community, and the Nieuwe Kerk, a historic church directly across Spuiplein, functions as an additional performance space linked to the Amare programme, known for its intimate atmosphere and strong acoustics. Beyond concerts and dance, Amare carries a significant conference and convention function. Programming ranges from orchestral and chamber music to dance, music theatre, circus, and cabaret, with an international reach that has made it a sought after stop for touring productions from abroad. Local communities are also part of the picture, with the venue actively participating in cultural holidays and festivals alongside The Hague's residents.
