Verkadefabriek takes its name from its origins as a Verkade biscuit factory, an industrial building on Boschdijkstraat in 's Hertogenbosch that was given a second life after the Den Bosch municipal council approved its conversion in February 2002 into a multidisciplinary cultural complex. The repurposed space retains much of its factory character, with exposed brick, high ceilings and generous open halls that give it an atmosphere quite different from purpose built concert halls or theatres. It sits a short walk northeast of the historic city centre, close to the Veemarkt area, and has grown into one of the defining institutions of the city's creative district. The programme at Verkadefabriek spans theatre, cinema, dance, music, cabaret and festivals, spread across two theatre halls, multiple cinema rooms and rehearsal studios, with a café restaurant that keeps the building active from daytime well into the evening. The venue also functions as a makers' house, where established companies and emerging artists develop new work through workshops, residencies and multimedia labs. In terms of music, the concert record skews toward singer songwriter, Americana and acoustic acts, with documented performances by Jeffrey Foucault, Billy Conway and Caitlin Canty, the Welsh singer Martyn Joseph, and Belgian indie artists among others. The capacity across its spaces runs up to around 300, which keeps the setting intimate even by the standards of a building with such a substantial footprint. That combination of industrial heritage, a broad artistic brief and a relatively small scale gives Verkadefabriek a character that distinguishes it from the larger concert infrastructure elsewhere in Noord Brabant.
