After a break, Froukje returns with her second solo album Kijk Je Naar Mij?, packed with housy beats, synths and lyrics about growing up.

Froukje is back with her second solo album, Kijk Je Naar Mij? (Are You Looking at Me?). The record follows her successful 2024 debut Noodzakelijk Verdriet (Necessary Sadness) and is the first solo project in which the singer fully shows herself again after a period of distance. According to NPO 3FM, all eyes are on her once more, partly because she didn't exactly sit still in the meantime: together with her friend and fellow artist S10, she made songs like "Hart In Brand" and "Ik Haat Hem Voor Jou."
In early 2025, Froukje announced on the NPO Radio 1 program Nooit Meer Slapen that she was taking a temporary break from performing and making music. "I feel like I need to take a bit of space and distance, and then I can happily make a new record again," she said at the time. Last summer she was back on stage, but in a different form than her audience was used to. After six years, she said goodbye to her band and performed completely solo at various open air theaters, a setup that took her audience back to the vulnerable beginnings of her music.
You can hear that farewell to the band in the music. The album revolves around fat synths and housy beats, while Froukje's beloved recipe remains recognizable: her almost spoken, poem like delivery, carried by a soft singing voice with a touch of wistfulness. As a result, according to NPO 3FM, you sometimes can't tell whether you should dance wildly or slouch down and think about your life. De Volkskrant describes her songs as club tracks and personal songs at the same time.
Lyrically, Froukje doesn't shy away from any subject. Where she mainly explored her inner world on Noodzakelijk Verdriet, on this album she looks outward, according to De Volkskrant. The album opens with two songs about drunkenness, "Het leven is een pil" (Life Is a Pill) and "Geen rem" (No Brakes), in which she recalls a morning with a bucket in her lap. Elsewhere it covers going out, finding and losing love, jealousy in "Ik wou dat ik jou was" (I Wish I Were You), wise advice in "Je moet bij hem weg" (You Have to Leave Him), and the paradox of sometimes wanting to be seen and sometimes not at all. Anxiety about the world on fire also comes up in songs like "Met jullie" (With You All) and "Wat moet ik in de oorlog?" (What Am I Supposed to Do in the War?).
"Geen Rem" captures the feeling of hangxiety: the shame about what you said or revealed the night before. The accompanying music video, directed by Lize Korpershoek, turns it into a contest in which Froukje wants to become Miss Frikandel. Whoever can eat the most (veggie) frikandellen wins a 25 euro voucher, under the motto "Throwing up means giving up." The closer, "Jaar Na Jaar" (Year After Year), is about analyzing a relationship, with the line "Sometimes it's pretty heavy. But I always choose you, you."
NU.nl Muziek has also given the record some attention. There it emerges that Froukje found the balance between stage and private life difficult and that she sometimes finds opinions about her music and her as a person complicated, but doesn't want to be held back by them. De Volkskrant is full of praise for the lyrics: accessible, poetic in their offhandedness, and never flat or pretentious. According to the paper, nobody in the Dutch speaking world makes the emotional hurricane of Gen Z feel as real.
For Dutch music fans, this is a relevant release: Froukje is one of the most recognizable Dutch language voices of the moment, and her new solo form without a band gives her live shows a different atmosphere than before.
