Hayden Panettiere has passed away at the age of 36

Hayden Panettiere, the American actress and singer who captivated millions of viewers worldwide with her roles in Heroes, Nashville, and the Scream franchise, passed away at home in South Carolina on Sunday, August 16, at the age of 36. TMZ and The New York Times both reported the news. No cause of death has been announced. Her father Skip Panettiere said in a statement: "It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her and to the millions who watched her onscreen."

Panettiere grew up as a child star in films like Remember the Titans and Raising Helen before breaking through in 2006 as cheerleader Claire Bennet in the science fiction series Heroes. She later played the recurring role of Kirby Reed in the fourth and sixth installments of the Scream franchise. Her most iconic role, however, remained that of country star Juliette Barnes in the ABC series Nashville, which ran from 2012 through 2018 and earned her two Golden Globe nominations.

Her musical legacy is closely tied to Nashville. Across the show's six seasons, Panettiere performed dozens of songs as Juliette Barnes, a significant number of which were commercially released on the show's soundtrack albums. Several of those recordings reached the Billboard country charts, giving her a chart history that went well beyond her identity as an actress. Songs like "Telescope," "Undermine" (a duet with Nashville costar Charles Esten), "Wrong Song," and "Don't Put Dirt on My Grave Just Yet" are concrete examples of tracks that charted. Just like her character Juliette, Panettiere also spoke openly about her own mental health struggles, which gave her performance an added personal dimension.

Her involvement with music actually started much earlier. As a child she contributed vocals to various film and television projects, recording songs for productions including Ice Princess and Bridge to Terabithia. In 2008 she released "Wake Up Call," her first single unconnected to an acting project. Notably, she received a Grammy nomination at just ten years old: in 2000 she was nominated in the category of Best Spoken Word Album for Children at the 42nd Grammy Awards for her contribution to the A Bug's Life Read Along, an audiobook based on the 1998 Pixar film. That made her one of the youngest Grammy nominees ever.
